Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can vary in severity.

Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life – for example, you may feel worried and anxious about sitting an exam, or having a medical test or job interview. During times like these, feeling anxious can be perfectly normal.

However, some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives.

Anxiety is the main symptom of several conditions, including:

  • panic disorder
  • phobias – such as agoraphobia or claustrophobia
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • social anxiety disorder (social phobia)

General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a long-term condition that causes anxiety around a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event. People with GAD feel anxious most days and often struggle to remember the last time they felt relaxed. As soon as one anxious thought is resolved, another may appear about a different issue.

Phobias are many and various and can take the form of a social phobia, specific phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, general anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and others. These are all considered to fall under the category of anxiety disorder, and usually, call for clinical and therapeutic treatment.

Integrative Counselling can help clients by assuming a systematic approach to dealing with individual issues and helping them with a session of clinical counselling first, to introduce them to their problems, and then by showing them the way to deal with and confront conflicting issues, without fear or phobia.

It has been medically proven that when people confront what they fear repeatedly without getting the usual negative outcome they actually feared, the sense of anxiety and/or phobia then gradually subsides. This does not only help in changing the mental framework of a person in a natural manner but also helps in building back the lost confidence and sensitivity towards self-esteem.

In severe cases, I will oversee the help of medicines and therapies that would help clients  to fight against the physical symptoms caused by anxiety and reach a stable ‘platform’.
